I thought I'd post 3 behind the scenes photos from the fake commercial I shot of the glow in the dark paper models. It was all done very cheaply (and it shows) with items from around my house. A good example of how cheap, is the white plastic bag around a light above our lovely hand model's head, that functioned as a "soft-box" light.

A 59 cent green board was used as a green-screen for the rubber bat that I shot several times. I then composited all the bat footage in After Effects over the house, moon, and trees that were all grabbed from google image searches.

Blurry image of the skeleton that I thought looked interesting. I found out that shooting the glowing paper models on video wasn't as easy as I thought. The little Flip video camera couldn't pick up the glowing models in a pitch-black room. I ended up using a still image, and just faked panning in on the models in AF.

Snapped this picture of a large halo around the moon last week. The Halo was so big, that I couldn't really get the whole halo in frame. The photo doesn't do justice to how awesome it looked in the night sky. It kind of looked like the moon had burned a perfectly circular hole in the overcast sky. The effect is caused by ice crystals in cirrus clouds high in the upper troposphere.

I also applaud the choice of music, straight from Transformers the animated movie, composed by the geniuses - Stan Bush. Bush’s other claim to fame is the Blood Sport soundtrack.

I was pretty obsessed with the Space Shuttle as a kid. I even built a model of the Space Shuttle that I rushed putting together; got glue fingerprints all over the shuttle windows.

Nova Warriors 2, is the follow up to the 1984 direct to home video movie; Nova Warriors. Nova Warriors 2 was released in 1986, but never achieved the success of the original. Many blame early preproduction problems, and trouble acquiring sufficient financial backing.
Most of the original cast turned down the sequel, demand higher pay, based on the success of the first movie. Even though images of the original cast were used in the second film, they were not compensated - no legal action was pursued.
The only original cast member to return to the production was Matt Perlot, even though his character dies in the first movie. This is one of many inconsistencies in the squeal that is never really explained. Many fans of the Nova Warrior movies claim that "The Loan Warrior " character, is brought back to life when the alien touches the forehead of The Loan Warrior, and speaks in his alien tongue. There is no proof to back-up such claims.
Nova Warriors 3 did go into preproduction, but was never able to get financial backing. There are internet rumors that the director is working on a remake of Nova Warriors.

No, I haven’t been living in a hole; I’m just ridiculously busy. For the most part I’ve been busy in a good way. I’ve also been spending my nights drawing and creating little comic stories. I just now started inking some of those drawings, and hopes too post them in the coming weeks.

Posted below is a random inked sketchpad doodle I did as a warm-up inking. I have no idea what I was going for with this doodle? But, I decided that this guy is a troll in a hole - waiting for a yummy goat to walk by.

• I got back from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) late Saturday night. GDC is held in San Francisco every year, which is always a blast. I did a talk on the Expo floor this year at the AutoDesk both, the people that make 3Ds MAX, the modeling software we use at Harmonix. I spoke for 30 minutes about the Rock Band 3 character creator. It was my first time speaking in front of people, so I was obviously a little nervous. I thought the talk went well, and by well I mean I didn't massively screw-up. I could have been a little smoother with my talk, but like I said, it was my first time speaking in front of people. It was a really good experience and I learned a lot about talking in front of people. The folks at Autodesk were really cool and helpful. You can see the video here GDC talk. It’s a pretty good insider view of how we prototyped the character creator for Rock Band 3.

I like the winters in Boston when snow is falling and everything is quite outside. You can stroll through empty snow cover streets. Get home and throw a log on the fire while sipping at your instant hot-coco, because you're to lazy to make the real thing. But, at this point I've lost track of how many storms we've had and I'm running out of places to pile the snow. I know we'll be seeing parking lot glaciers coated in black asphalt particles and exhaust soot till June.

We've just had another snow fall that's turned to freezing rain. I drew a little Queen Clown comic last night in preparation for the coming storm.

What! 2011 started!?

I’m already off to a semi unproductive start in the New Year. I do have my excuses ready for why I was unproductive.

1. Work got really busy. (My real job that I get paid for on a regular basis.)

2. Got the winter blues. (This winter has been rough. I like sun and surfing.)

3. Started playing minecraft….. Oh minecraft, that’s the one that derailed me.

I was avoiding the game for awhile, but it was one of those itches I had to scratch, and did I scratch it. That game is so strangely addictive for what it is. I know for one thing it’s the Lego like building aspect that really sucked me in. Fighting the monsters and crafting is okay, but the building is my drug. I also find the mining for materials strangely addictive as well. But enough about minecraft for now - it didn’t derail me that much; I did actually work on stuff.

What’s really been up is that I realized I need to take a couple steps back before running headlong into a bunch of new drawings and comic book pages. I’m halfway through writing a new Sea Savage book. I want to do a 30 or 40 some page Sea Savage that is one story, as oppose the collection 8 pagers I did in volume 1. I also want it to be more of a young kid’s adventure book in color – yes, in full Technicolor.

I did a few recent Sea Savage sketches that I posted below. I was trying out a Japanese manga ink that a friend of mine lent me. I unfortunately can’t remember the name of the ink, but I’ll post it later. It makes a nice line and goes down in a deep black. I’m going to use it again tonight, just to make sure I love it, then I’ll order some if I can find it.

Both images are basically made to practice inking. I’ve been doing a few “throw away” drawings over the past couple of days just to work on inking. The Sea Savage image is more about refining his look which includes the style in which I want to ink everything. It’s the same look as he’s always had; I’ve just refined it a little more. The other is from a Queen Clown drawing. I said this before, but I hope to be posting QC weekly on my blog soon…….

The great thing about an empty roll of wrapping paper, is that it can be recycled into a lightsaber. Back in the day there weren't sweet lightsaber toys like there are now. Any empty roll of wrapping paper was instantly converted into a lightsaber and sent into battle.

I have two new models for the Holidays, an elf and a reindeer. Their look is inspired by the 1964 Rudolph TV movie. That's why my reindeer looks more like a white tailed deer than a real reindeer. I got a little more complex with the designs, so they're a little harder to build then last years models. I'm going to steer back towards simple and easy to build for future models.

The nose on the elf is really tricky and small, so I drew a little nose on her head. I had a hard time with the nose that's why I've made it optional. Links to PDFs of the models below, and I hope you enjoy building the elf and reindeer.

I’m going to attempt to post Queen Clown one shot panels /comic strips on regularly schedule if possible. I’m aiming for posting something QC related every Wednesday. I’ll start by posting the original Queen clown zine 00, that I sold at APE in San Francisco a few months ago.

Queen Clown basically follows 2 vaudeville-ish characters (using the term loosely), and their wacky adventures. I’ve been bouncing around the QC idea for years, and never really did anything with it other than small projects. I was always trying to make the story logical and fit into some reality. Like the odd title of the comic, I decided that I’d have more fun with the comic if it was strange - anything goes. The QC world doesn’t have to live within a certain rule set, unlike Sea Savage that has a little more of a defined world, (again I’m using “defined” loosely). I can basically put the main characters of Queen Clown in any situation. This is a lot more fun for me, and I can use QC as the structure to present the ideas within. I guess think of it as a sketchbook with a story - if that makes sense?

To contradict what I just said, I do have a QC story that I’m going to work on that does ground the characters a little. But this will take a while, so till then I’ll just do the weekly single page or strip.

I'm a big fan of the original 1982 Tron movie. It's one of those films that I feel was visually ground breaking and original for its time. I never got to see the movie in the theaters unfortunately, but rented the hell out of it on VHS when I was a kid.

I’m geeking out about the new movie and can’t wait to see it. To prove how much of a Tron geek I’ve become in the past week – I drew a little picture of Tron and Quorra.

This is a little late, but Rockband 3 hit the streets on Tuesday. It's been getting great reviews which is nice. We all put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears; and then some more blood into that game.

It's a massive game with tones of game-play that I'm not responsible for. I was the character lead on the project, and helped build the new character creator. People seem to be having fun with it which makes me happy. I only noticed one reviewer so far had picked up on the fact that we changed the look of the characters. It wasn't a major style departure, but if you put the RB and RB3 characters side by side, you can see the difference - they're a little more mature looking. The whole game got a visual overhaul, and I'm really proud of how the game looks. It's all secondary compared to the music. But the way we're rendering everything, the new vignettes (which are awesome) added a fresh look to the whole game.

Can't wait to play the pro guitar.

The 2010 APE expo is over and it was a crazy ride. This was my first comic book convention, so I really didn't know what I was in for. I learned a lot and met some really cool people.

People were really receptive to Sea Savage and my new zine Queen Clown. I'm looking forward to expanding on both books. There was a lot of great art and artist displaying at APE, and I could have gone broke buying zines and art.

I'll post more about APE later when I have some free time.

Yesterday morning I did the breakfast hot dog. There are certain foods that are designated as a lunch or dinner meal, much like cold pizza, hot bogs are breakfast food in my world. I wouldn't make a hot dog for breakfast at home, but hot dogs made by someone else are fair game.

On my way into work I stopped by a hot dog wagon called, "Speeds". Several friends have recommended the place, and it's on my moped rout (also got best of Boston 2009). My stomach sometimes overrides my brain circuits, and good dietary judgment goes out the window. I had one Speeds's dog with mustard and Speed secret relish - I heard a dog with everything is the way to go, after the fact. Had I know how much dog you get from this wagon, I'd probably waited till lunch.

The hot dog was good, my belly was happy, and I had no horrible after shocks from eating a breakfast - dog.

Painting I did for, "Get Your Freak On". The shows theme is side show-show freaks and circus folk, which I totally have a fascination with. The shows opening reception is Friday April 30th for 6-8 at Space 242.

The Painting is 18 x24, done in ink and acrylic. I usually work smaller on bristle board, adding limited color digitally. But I've been wanting to transfer my inked line and limited color style to a larger format for several years. I've done 2 smaller paintings in this style on wood, but this is the largest piece I've done in this style.

Whenever work slows down I'm going to revisit the roller-girl inked sketch I post awhile ago and do a larger painting.

The app lets you build your own side scrolling shooter with graphics you draw. You can really dig into the level design and tweak the game play, but the fun for me is just drawing crazy creatures to fight.

Lately I've been wanting to use zbrush for "3D sketchinng". I would like to get a system working where I can quickly sketch a head or character in one night, and get a fairly solid looking model. After watch the movie" Krull" (which has some awesome stuff mixed in with a lot of bad) I decide to try and start doing the 3D sketching.

In the movie there's a cyclops character that is basically a tall actor with an animatronic eye. He looked pretty cool for the time the movie was made. I think cyclops are pretty awesome in general, but anatomically and evolution wise they really don't work. Anatomically their one eye in the middle of their head makes it hard to resolve the bridge of nose below the eye. Evolutionary having one eye screws you for depth perception - I guess you might adapt? I had the idea of quickly modeling a cyclops to resolve in my mind how the facial structure could work. After I started sketching, I realized that I didn't know the mythology of the cyclops. After reading a little about the Cyclops on wikipedia, I found out that there were only 3 cyclops and not a whole race. So my cyclops is based more on the Krull world.... I guess?

Sea Savage 1 - 7

I added books 1 to 7 on Etsy, all 7 can be purchased for 5.50. This is the last time they'll be sold in the handmade minicomic format. I'm in the process of laying out the 12 minicomics plus extras to be printed as a collection in a book. If all goes well I'l be peddling my book online and at comic conventions. I may also be porting the comic over to the iphone once I figure out the logistics with a friend who offer to do the programming.

I've always been a little fascinated with the movie; "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians". I'm more fascinated with the concept of Santa fighting martians, than the actual movie. I just like that someone thought that it was totally reasonable to mix the two genres. This Holiday season I decide to play on the Santa and Martian idea, and made my own paper models of the two.

I officially finished book 12 last night. This is the last minicomic in the Sea Savage series. I made a goal to make 12 books in one year - it's actually been 2 years. I started this comic 2 years ago on this month. I'm glad I stuck with my goal and actually made 12 minicomics, unfortunately it took me a year longer then I wanted.

I finished penciling 12 last night and will hopefully be able to start inking. I want to keep up the momentum to finish this book. Inking usually takes me two nights if all goes well. I'm pretty happy with the idea for the last book.

Nova Warriors, is a fake trail for a straight to VHS movie made in 1984. The footage was shot on Georges Island during Harmonixs annual day trip to the island. The idea was to try and make a short movie out of randomly shot footage. We had no plan for the film ahead of time. An impromptu "fight club" broke out in the belly of the abandon fort on Georges island. I recorded that with my point and shoot Canon Elf, (tells you the production value of the movie.) That was the jumping off point for our movie. From there we shot random scenes around the fight, still having no real goal in mind. We shot some addition close -ups of punches. I also just let people adlib lines about the fight and do whatever they want. I edited together what useable footage I had, and add stock footage to help flesh out the rest of the movie. This trailer is probably only funny to me and my friends, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

I was driving behind a Land Rover in the Dig. Inside the back area of the truck were 3 kids sitting in a semi-circle talking. The Land Rover’s back area is boxy and pretty open with big windows. It made me think that it would be cool to have cars that drove themselves and you could just sit around inside reading or chatting with friends - kind of like a mini subway car. I then started doodling a little futuristic hover car; (it’s the future, you have to have a hover car). I wanted to make the car a little cartoonish with the big bubble top. I do think a large open window format like this would be great to ride around in. You could see more of your surroundings; not so claustrophobic. A car that drives itself isn’t that far off from what I’ve read or seen on TV. I think people have been working on those for years, the hover aspect of the car who knows?

The two heads in the upper corner are the passengers. I used them as a warm-up for inking with a brush. I inked the car with pens.

I hope to start posting drawings again, I kind of burnt myself out doing who dominance war thing. After Dom War I took a week off of doing anything creative other then messing around with some video stuff. I then took a week vacation, where again I did nothing creative, but I did swim everyday for hours on end. I think I almost spent more time in the water then on land. Right before I went on vacation I bought a moped a friend of mine suggested would be a good buy. It’s a 1980 Sachs G3, It’s in great condition for how old it is. I took off the turn-signals since they didn’t work, and weren’t original to the bike. I finally got to really ride the moped on Sunday and open it up - it’s running great. I’m going to ride it to work tomorrow so I hope all goes well.

I finally finished with Dominance War 4! If I knew what I was getting into I might have never entered. The past two weeks have been a marathon of working into the wee hours of the night. I really underestimated how all consuming this contest was go to be. I reached a point during the contest that if I would have given up, I would have thrown out so much time and hard work. I was determined to see it to the bitter end. In the end I’ve learned a so much more about modeling and texturing. It was hard work, but I definitely feel like it was worth it. I can now resume my normal life, or actually have a life. I’ll be taking a break from doing any art for about a week, but I’ll resume drawing, finish the last Sea Savage book, and other art projects I had to shelve till Dom War was over. I’m a walking zombie. This Dominance War 3D model competition is killing me. It’s good that I’m doing it, but the amount of work you need to put into the 3D model is brutal. The contest is over in week and half. They extended the deadline out a week, so I can slow down my nightly work pace a little. I might actually be able to draw again, or go to bed before 2 a.m. Here’s the link to my Dominance War thread – Meatpie.

My first foray into paper craft. I made a sea critter riding a octopus car form artist Matt Hawkins "go bananas" template - it's like painting a vinyl toy blank. You can see my entry and others at horrorwood. There's a lot of great entries and check out Matt Hawkins' papercraft book. In the future I hope to actually do one of my own designs.

I've come to the end of another sketchbook. It took me about a year to fill this one. I've dubbed it my "NASA book" because of the NASA sticker on the back. If I actually drew every doodle and sketch in one sketchbook, I'd fill a book in 3 months easy. I draw a lot at my desk on an ad art pad, a.k.a. marker paper. I sometimes find sketchbooks to be small and confining. The bigger marker pages are a little more open and let your arm move - I drew my tiptoe girl on marker paper. Tomorrow I hope to post more about tiptoe girl, I might actually do something with the drawing beyond this blog, but back to the sketchbook. I did buy a larger sized sketchbook several years ago that I loved drawing in, but the book was too big to easily carry around the city. I kind of view my sketch books like diaries. Sometimes the things I put in them are kind of personal and only for me. I'm always a little sad when I get to the last page of a good sketchbook. Well... without further adieu, I'm retiring NASA. I thought I'd post one last drawing that I wasn't going to post originally, but I kind of like it. It was a warm up inking of a woman's head, and it's kind of sloppy, but that's what I like about it

Spent most of the evening updating my website; I add a links to some of my illustrations.. I like having a website, but I hate updating my site. It doesn't help that my web-design skills are nonexistent. I can pretty much only do the most basic html page - images with rollovers. It does the job, but I need to find a webpage template that'll gussy up my site.

A friend and I entered the batman 2.0 contest hosted by project : rooftop. The contest was to design a costume for Robin, A.K.A. Boy Wonder - if he took over the job as Batman. I took the logical rout and made a slight variation of Batman's traditional costume. Everyone else did the same thing and my concept didn't really stand out. Sadly my frien and I didn't even get an honorable mention. In the end I'm only really happy with the pose, the ink job I did could have been much better. I'm posting my drawing here along with my friends, Matt Moore. Mine is the more serious looking batman 2.0 and Moore's is the pantsless Robin. I had joked about the idea of doing a Batman 2.0 with the Robin tights, but Moore had the cajones to pull it off and make a awesome drawing.

Started doodling so I could practicing inking, and ended up drawing this lady tiptoeing. She's totally goofy, but I had a lot of fun drawing and inking her. I kind of gave her some Mod patterning, which was also fun to play around with.

Sea Savage on Etsy

I was unaware that my Sea Savage minicomics on Etsy had been removed - not sure when this happened, or why? I'm sure it was something I screwed up on my end. Well problem solved, I've posted new items for sale on Etsy. This time I made it easier, and only put books 1 -5 to purchase for $4. Last time I gave people the option to buy individual books, or books 1 to 4 bundled together, everyone seemed to prefer buying them in bulk. I have one more book to make, and then I'll probably do a limited sale on Etsy of all the minicomics before printing them all in one big book.

Dominance War IV

Entered Dominance War VI today; It's a 3D modeling competition. I pretty much entered to motivate myself to make a 3D model in my spare time. Most of my 3D work is all Rockband related. This contest is the opposite end of the spectrum. I don't typically do gross medieval creatures, but this is my take on a demon that falls under the "abomination" category of the contest. I really just want to make a creature that was a little Hieronymus Bosch influenced and gross. I'll keep posting my progress, and hopefully I'll actually finish it. I'm also going to do some inkings of happier things as well when time permits.

Sea savage 11

Finally finished Sea Savage 11. I was finished with the comic about 5 days ago, but it took me awhile to get it "printed". My beloved Xerox machine is still alive and well, for now. It had been moved to a dusty corner and abandoned. I hope it's still around for book 12 - even more reason to finish 12 sooner then later. Tonight I folded 35 books to hand out to friends while watching, Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Carcia.

3D Ahuizotl

I'm thinking of entering a 3D modeling art challenge that started Saturday. The image is from an unfinished model I was working on at home. We had an internal art challenge at work about a year ago. We had to pick a mythical creature to model. The mythical creature I picked was based on an Aztec creature called Ahuizotl, a monkey dog. The description of the creature was pretty goofy, so I thought that it would be a fun challenge to make it scary and seem like it could have existed. The most challenging thing to design was making a hand on the end of a tail look functional. I never finished the challenge because we went into crunch time on Rockband 2. I'd say I was about 70% finished with the modeling. I needed to do a big polish pass. I'll post some more images of this model and some sketches when I have more time.

Sea Savage may run into a printing hold-up. I had access to a free Xerox machine at an undisclosed location. Unfortunately that Xerox machine no longer exist - it vanished. The reason I liked using the Xerox, is that it makes flat black reproductions. I'll either have to pay for new Xerox print-outs, or break the consistency of the books, and print them out differently for free.

On another note I helped out a friend by making graphics for an iPone app. The app is called gflowers ( g + flowers). It was designed for kids as young as 2 years old. You literally just touch the screen and flowers grow with simple goofy faces. You don't have to be 2 to enjoy it by the way. There are several adults that like to just tap on the screen an have flowers grow. The image is the screen capture of the app store screen for gflowers.

I bought some new brushes last week, so I inked this dog-man thing. Not sold on the new brushes yet, but I think I need to get comfortable with them. The brushes I bought are suppose to be good brushes on the cheap. I'm pretty happy with them so far, and the quality seems good. I usually like to use a Winsor & Newton series 7 #1. Those brushes are are double the price of my new brushes and are about the same quality. I also bought three different brushes sizes. I need to figure out what kind of line weight I'll get from each brush. I used a 3 for most of the inking on dog-man, and I think the brush size was too big for some of the areas.

The saying in the word bubble is pretty nerdy, but it had to be done.

pixel art and Savage 11

Because I can't post anything with out a picture I'm post a little pixel art style spaceship flying over a pixel planet. I have a graph paper notepad that screams to have pixel art drawn in it.

Sea Savage 11 is underway - I finally got motivated to block out the story. I actually new what I wanted to do for book 12; the last book in the minicomic series. Book 11 was a little tougher to block out. I new I want to do a story with action, and I wanted to have Saszoo the pirate girl in it, but I was blanking on the story. Last night I put it all together, so I'll start penciling book 11 tonight, and I hope to have it finished this month.

The drawing is a little off, but it's a sketchbook drawing. The brush I've been using to ink has started to give out. I've had it for a long time and the bristles are starting to lose their shape. It's kind of sad when a good brush starts to go; it served me well.

I love Frankenstein, well the monster, but I call him Frankenstein like everyone else does. Wasn't feeling too creative, but I want to practice inking, so I drew Frankenstein. At the top of the page you will notice a password to Tecmo Bowl; the old nes football game. The only sports video game I ever liked playing - I downloaded it on the Wii.
